Re: Small joys and random good things

I almost forgot! After all the headache with the building where my wife has her shop (new, invasive tenants with poorly-thought-out business plan), she found a new space and the old landlord agreed to let her out of the lease! And the new space is bigger, cheaper, in a better neighborhood, and clos...

Re: Orange is the new President

I haven't seen the Axios interview, but if it was the massive piece of stupidity the media claims, it doesn't seem to have affected the Orange One's approval ratings. It is. And why would it? Agree. I just can't get my head around the excuses his followers make. I believe if Trump fell on the floor...

Re: Twitter!

I know I'm going to regret asking this, but is there some reason to think Marion is 22 during the events of the movie? I find it bizarre that anyone wouldn't just assume "child" was hyperbole, the way all right-thinking people now talk about 8-year-olds as "babies" when they're murder victims. No, ...

Re: Food

Today's lunch: tasty tacos made from pig parts, namely oreja and buche . (And one tinga , too.) Taco trucks on every corner: yes please. Only if the food truck markup goes away. Every food truck around here has about a 50% additional markup for what you'd get from a brick and mortar restaurant (if ...

Gotta find me some parts and fix this cam riser on my fridge. Door keeps opening at rando times.
Isn't that more of a problem with the seal? If the weight of the door can pull it open, it seems like less of a problem with the cam riser.

Re: Home $weet Home

I've been really impressed by the quality of the oven on our 2 year old GE Profile range. Very stable temperature, very good heat retention. Takes on the order of 3-4 hours to cool down if you keep it closed. And yeah, heating element below the floor, with a depression in the floor even for a "steam...

Re: What are you drinking?

I am now drinking (as in generally, not this minute) this ridiculous alcoholic fruit punch . We call it my “juice” and yes I am Buster Bluth now. It’s really pretty good and tastes like fruit punch only and then you’re like wait I’m drunk and it takes a whole week to actually look at the can and re...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

I basically spend the entire summer getting angry every time I see someone in long sleeves, I hate people who aren't hot all the time, I hate them so much. Even a little bit of hair on my ears or neck bothers me, so I spend every summer having a similar knee-jerk annoyance anytime I see someone wea...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

We've seen plenty of situations where, even if it's not absolutely everyone in the country going along with it, the President has been able to be a unifying and inspiring force, for good or ill. In this situation, a president who had the wherewithal to actually follow a plan, to recognize what was g...

Re: Petty annoyances

Well, the easy way is if everyone's been working some overtime, if you say "Ok, no overtime from now on." then a lot of work is going to go undone. And then there are other stories I'm seeing of packages dropped off at post office loading docks that just sit. Like once things get in the system, they...

Re: Petty annoyances

We've been getting packages faster than expected, but we mostly order from Amazon. I think there's just a lot of strange things afoot in the USPS now, and some of the reporting on it seems contradictory. Trump hates Amazon, but they're prioritizing Amazon's packages?

I probably don't want to actually see a bunch of Gamera movies, but this is a great job of cutting together a trailer from a whole bunch of old movies.

Re: Corona Capitalism

Dr. Sarah Taber does have her own axes that she frequently grinds, but when Imperfect Foods (one of the sellers of Ugly produce) comes out and says "She's right, but farmers lose money if they have to sell as livestock feed" to me, that's giving the game away: It's not about food waste, it's capturi...

Re: Corona Capitalism

Good for us: We've been using Hello Fresh for over a year, and have actually quite enjoyed it, recent shipping issues notwithstanding. We actually increased our amount of meals from them to 5 per week since very early in the pandemic, and have not failed to make any of them. I do like that there are...

Re: Corona Capitalism

The "ugly" produce thing is bullshit / a scam. As recounted by multiple people on twitter, the idea that there is produce that is just left to rot unused solely because it doesn't look good enough for a produce display is complete bunk, because there are multiple processed uses for everything. It do...

Re: Petty annoyances

Yeah, the fully-prepared meals thing is just out for us. Not interested at all. The main thing we like about Hello Fresh is that they do the ingredient portioning for two people. We don't need to have a whole bottle of umpteen different sauces on the shelf going bad when we make a recipe once. We do...

Re: Petty annoyances

I think we've run into the super shitty employee for Hello Fresh. Two weeks in a row, our food has not shipped out from there. The old "Notice sent to FedEx" and then no updates, and no food. And the two weeks before that, it was badly packed and missing recipe cards. Customer Service is "filing a r...

FWIW, our own personal-property electronic devices -- mainly the TV and our computers -- are fine, and we never lost our electricity, only our communication utilities. Only the modem and cable boxes, which IIRC are both company property rather than "our stuff" (we need not pay to replace them, mere...

Re: Petty annoyances

Today was Jeff's official first day of being On Vacation (not that we're going anywhere, of course, but he is obligated to burn through a certain amount of paid time off before the end of his "fiscal work year"), and he spent the whole day running various unexpected errands, which he must continue ...
