Re: The Future Will Despise Us Brutal Bastards

"This island nation used military-enforced lockdowns and has so far only had one recurrence!" OK, yeah, I'm sold. I'm more sold by Japan having fewer total COVID deaths than we've had in one day. Or, more starkly, the whole very crowded country having less than a sixteenth of the total deaths NYC a...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

It's not meant to soothe. It's a rallying-cry to fight for equality and against the very idea that people aren't equal or can be allowed to hold that idea. It's the dumbass "Paradox of Tolerance" argument writ large, complete with a mention of it. I think it's part of a long Progressive stance that...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

And I'll say it. If bigotry isn't natural, why have we been doing it and outright inventing new reasons for it all of human history? We've gone from calling our own tribes words that mean "actual proper people" and gleefully killing or abducting and raping members of the neighboring tribes to invent...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

I also agree that the initial setup of Omelas is basically "Assume a spherical utopia of uniform density, with whatever arbitrary attributes you want a utopia to have." Is Omelas a utopia? Well, for the majority of the inhabitants, who are not troubled by moral qualms, yes. From the authorial or re...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

I got pointed to "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" by N. K. Jemisin, her answer to/variation on "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas". I just read it. It's the first Jemisin thing I've ever read, and based on her contempt for her reader it will probably be the last. I'm just not clear who the fuck it's ...

I would sum them up as follows: Le Guin: Here's this utopia; oh wait it's not really a utopia because it's built on suffering. Jemisin: Here's this utopia, and it's utopia because they kill anybody who has wrongthink I have more to add later when I'm in front of a keyboard, but I'd just point of th...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

I got pointed to "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" by N. K. Jemisin, her answer to/variation on "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas". I think the best I can say of it is that it thoroughly avoids some of the inanities of "Omelas" and actually has a point beyond " lol you can't even imagine a perfect soc...

On the other hand, South Korea and other countries in the region are doing far better than the west without full lockdowns because people actually bother to perform the minimal necessary measures to control the disease. (New Zealand has also done well, mainly by being a bunch of islands in the middl...

I'm just fairly sure the stories about it involving a remote-control truck with a remote-control machine gun are bullshit.

Re: Voting methodologies

Could it remotely be feasible to set up something that works like the reverse of the primary/general election system for governors and presidents? That is, get a list of candidates for each party, everyone votes for the party they want to win, and then have everybody vote for the the candidate of th...

And then, looking at things in retrospect, there's the far-left/conservative alliance in playing up things like the Chaz as widespread chaos/resistance in Seattle (as opposed to six city blocks for less than a month).

One thing I don't know how you re-cork the genie on post-Trump is 'Defund the Police' as a slogan. The ideas are kind of sound and the slogan is the absolute stupidest branding on the fucking planet. Worse than "Lose weight fast with Ayds!" Triangulate as the reasonable alternative...pitching the e...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Not to mention VP Harris, whose appeal to the left consists entirely of melanin and mammary glands and not her actual policy positions. That, and being pretty and having a high degree of that Trumplike confidence team fans like, is pretty much her only appeals to anyone in Team Blue. The "progressi...

If it's lots of bombing and drones and non-boot-wearing Special Operations forces at a level that's more than just a couple guys, a level that involves a whole bunch of people quietly maintaining logistics and supply lines but not telling their home-town newspapers about it, I think we're there and...

Re: Predictions for 2030

By 2030, there will have been no major US involvement in Syria. Future US presidents will give Syria the same, "Did I say red line that mustn't be crossed and will force action? I meant pink line that makes us sad to see crossed." treatment Obama did.

Re: The Road to Damascus

I'm still at the wary stage when I'm not sure I'm ready to worry about/despise the Biden cabinet, and am just content with a step down to mainstream career political fuckheadedness vs. nepotism and excessive consideration toward Russia when it comes to foreign policy. In the case of Syria, how long ...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

I'd argue that the Unite the Right rally would have not happened at all with a president who didn't openly embrace fascist support. Not even just a handful of skinheads being yelled at by counter-protestors. The whole point of it was that the psycho-racist end of the right saw Trump as a sea-change.

Nearly half of the voters voted for him anyway. So while I was not quite literally correct about the median voter, clearly a large fraction of the electorate was willing to give him and his Congressional enablers a pass. Ever since the poll of mask-wearing Trump supporters who thought he supported ...

I was down to my last dozen or so rolls of toilet paper, so I reordered a box of the Georgia-Pacific office toilet paper I'd gotten back in April. Did the same with paper towels. I'll probably get a grocery delivery early this week or next week. Beyond that, I have both my hurricane supplies and far...

Re: We can win the war in Vietnam!

(If that doesn't work, try pointing out that there's a reason 90% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the border, but not so much in the US case.) That has more to do with the distribution of arable land than proximity to the US. Sure, but trade is a factor, too. One country is a l...
