Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

The Manhattan DA got some mileage from the charge but there's not much to be gained from an actual prosecution. My guess would be it will be kicked down to some misdemeanor public nuisance plea, if that. Furthermore, it's worth noting that in the vast majority of such cases even if and when the pol...

TV-related random observation: TV and reruns have been around long enough that our language ought to have a single word to describe a specific form of TV-show memory: "I know I've seen that show back in the day, I know its theme song and what at least ONE main character looked like ... but otherwis...

Re: Mo's moderately interesting sci/tech thread

DNA study has proven conclusively that there was contact between Polynesian and South American peoples , something that had long been suspected because of the existence of the sweet potato and similar names for it in both places. Scientists said on Wednesday an examination of DNA from 807 people - ...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

I think Amy Cooper should have to deal with the justice system for trying to exploit it to harm or kill someone. We know damn well it's unlikely that she'd serve any jail time; she'd have to deal with the courts and pay money to lawyers and in fines. She deserves that grief. On the other hand, I res...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

Stepping back a bit, Eric, it seems like you are _agreeing_ with me on the factual issue that comes up in this debate. (While disagreeing with me on, I guess, the tactical and strategic levels?) Depends on the factual issue in question. Like, the "cancel culture isn't a thing" side Who here is argu...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

Those people were losing power in large portions of academia by the mid 90's. They lost power because people said "We are supposed to be better than that" and then acted on that notion. Right now they are gaining power again and some of us are gearing up to fight back again. Because we believe we a...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

It's also a little hard to see people on the Right who still don't grasp how their actions helped to create the circumstances in which we find ourselves freaking out and not think "fuck it, you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind," at least a little bit. Of course I also just got told that getting...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

I heard a slightly more sympathetic critique of the ACLU decision than that from one of my grandfather's friends when I was growing up. Old line Wobbly, also lost a lot of family in the Holocaust. Said, of the ACLU, "great, you made the world safe for Nazis to march. D'ya suppose they'll do the sam...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

I have to confess that I also didn't know that Skokie was when things stopped improving for the ACLU. I'm not sure what this means. All I'm saying is that's when the American left-of-center started moving away from civil liberties. Starting points for shifts over the course of decades tend to look ...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

When the right attacks free speech, that's business as normal. When the left, academia, or tech swing against it, that's scary, because that's the coalition I've been relying on. And I think that's a lot of what Thoreau and I are reacting to. Academia is far from the worst offenders on these issues...

I am not as old as the Skokie case. But I had always heard of that as a shining example of what the ACLU and the left stood for. I would like them to still stand for it. Look into the fallout of the case and how much support the ACLU lost. Without looking into it at the moment, that's horrifying th...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

Jadagul, are you even as old as the Skokie case? Because I basically trace the turning away from free speech by the left to that controversy. Mind, I don't think of it in left-wing "the ACLU went too far" terms, but in terms of the left realizing that civil liberties wasn't just intellectual cover f...

i think calling the current environ "our maoist moment" cheapens mao's horrors. calling it "the great awokening" however, is far more on point. who knows what rough legislations slouch toward something something awaiting to be something something'd? "The Chicks" have only ever profited by playing off segments of their audience against each other or their ex-audience. They'll be fine. So making nice isn't something th...

It was pretty loud here, too. I there's always a lot of noise, but there was definitely more than usual. I assume because people couldn't go to organized shows and because everyone's got stress to let out.
