OxyContin maker to plead guilty to federal criminal charges, pay $8 billion, and will close the company Wow, that sounds really serious! They're just going to directly shut down the maker of OxyContin! They must be really determined to end the opioid crisis... The company will be dissolved as part ...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

I'm guessing it is unpatriotic not to support wasting taxpayer money for jolly jetmen to show off at a jockfest. In all fairness, pilots do have to keep up a certain number of flight hours, and airshows count towards that like anything else would. They burn the same amount of fuel whether they're f...

No good. Jungle is not much of tourist destination. You won't get enough traffic to keep the fence up. I'd go with The Warriors. Get the city to pay you to take six blocks of slum off their hands. Get vendors to pay you rent on themed drug stores and newspaper stands. Get nerds to pay you cosplay to...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

I'm not sure if sneers is the word I would use. Bazelon is pointing out some of the negative consequences of relatively robust free speech in a digital world. The proposed solutions that I see in here are: [the government] could stop the decline of local reporting by funding nonprofit journalism. I...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

The NY Times Magazine pretty explicitly sneers at the idea that free speech is good: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/13/magazine/free-speech.html As we hurtle toward the November election with a president who has trapped the country in a web of lies, with the sole purpose, it seems, of remaining in...

I've never managed to keep potatoes good for more than like a week and a half. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but not entirely sure what. Re: Food

Potatoes and onions are precisely the kinds of root vegetables that people store in bulk and eat over the winter. They'll be a little soft after a couple or three months but not inedible, if stored outside of light, and IIRC Alton Brown suggested that onions and potatoes should be kept apart from e...

I'm cautiously optimistic about season 3 of Disco. " Ha ha ha Good one. What really? We need to rebuild the Federation" feels like a relevant story for the moment. Sure, why not? The unearned emotional stakes are still there, but that's a symptom of the larger GAoTV 10-episode-season model. GAoTV? ...

The wires look way too thin for a kilo-amp. But if you're only going to push that much through them for two seconds, they probably won't melt the insulation.

Batteries have gotten a lot better over the past decade. A _lot_ better. If a thing you carry in your trouser pocket can throw 10+ kilowatts, I'd say so. Cause damn. It's the high amperage that gets me. That was always a problem with dry cells. Thing I have is rated at 300 mA continuous (for 12V, I...

I finally bought a $50 portable jump-start battery kit, and this seems like a really good purchase. Will hold a charge for like a year and is good for multiple jumps. *Amazon's* Holy crap!
