Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

I would classify what foreign non-governments think of us as a rather important component of prestige. And it is important and it does matter. It makes our diplomacy more potent, but more importantly it drives our economy that talented people want to live here and work here. (And would drive it even...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

By and large, foreigners did like and trust the US to a large extent. They like and trust it much less than they used to.

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

So the core of my critique of Trump is that there are a lot of places where the literal numbers he's putting up aren't that bad. We've killed fewer foreigners than we did in the Iraq invasion, the economy is doing fine, etc. But in a lot of cases, Trump is spending down capital. He's spending down i...

I seriously considered doing my lectures over Twitch last April.

I definitely did the "everyone type 1 in chat if..." thing. It was genuinely helpful!

Re: It doesn't matter if you're black or white

There is a new Rachel Dolezal. She's an associate professor at GWU and she claimed to be black. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-54008495 So I saw her popping up on my politics twitter feed, but without her affiliation. And then all the GW sources I follow started talking about her, and I h...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

I loved Tuscany. We were staying in Florence, but it was a choir tour so we were taking day trips to other towns to perform there. Every meal I had was good, and I got them all by, like, wandering into a random restaurant and it was great. But my parents went out of their way to find overcomplicated...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

When I spent a week in Tuscany, I had no bad meals. My parents spend like four days in Florence and said they had no good food while they were there, and I was baffled. Then I went to Rome with them, and I understood. My mother put a lot of effort into only going to restaurants recommended by one of...

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

i'm a little slow today but what's the deal with the ages? is that even notable? My reading is that the OP is a clueless Zoomer who doesn't understand that age gaps aren't that big a deal when you're an adult. He's getting ratio'ed pretty hard. And dad-guy is trolling him by retweeting. Yeah. I'm p...

Somewhere in the past day or two I saw an article about how covid-19 is hitting especially hard among evangelicals in Latin America; the Catholics halted in-person Mass and took other covid-19 precautions but evangelicals for the most part did not, and predictable consequences ensued. Which is, of ...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

I was tempted to walk down near enough to the National Mall that I could see the fireworks last night. (Now that that's an option for me!)

But that sounded like it was nearly guaranteed to turn into a complicated mess. And also I was tired.

There is an irritating story that pops up every election cycle: "Forecaster X has been right about every election since (specified year). Here's what he predicts this year." ( Example here ) Since there are thousands of people making predictions, it is a statistical certainty that several of them w...

If you mean the Indy Boots, go for it.
I'll add it to the list of things to budget for, but I shouldn't drop $600 on a whim.

Especially not in the middle of moving. :P

Fuck fuck fuck. I really don't like Chrome. I guess they'll make a Firefox that uses a fork of the chrome or safari engine with a firefox style UI. I haven't tried Safari in a while, maybe I'll like it. Do my kid a favor and try out Brave. If he becomes a billionaire someday, I'll steal the yacht a...

This is not financial advice.
While that's entirely fair, I should still probably have my cash in the account that pays 1% rather than the account that pays .05%.

Get a decent savings account. A high-interest savings account these days will pay like 1.5-2%, which would put the number at about $2k. (I still need to move my cash to a better account, but I'm kind of waiting for the move to finish and all that cash to settle out.) Is this true? Cursory shopping ...

Makes sense. We've had enough time to scale up sanitizer production, people have gotten less careful, and also we've learned that contact isn't the/a primary mode of transmission. So hand sanitizer is way less important than we thought it was back in March/April.

But as Ellie says, I'm not sure what they'd notice in the first month of widespread administration that they wouldn't notice in Phase III. Like, five years in, yes, but one month in, seems unlikely. That said, it's also pretty unlikely that most of us will actually have the option to get vaccinated...
