Re: The Future Will Despise Us Brutal Bastards

"clear consistent unified messaging" The occasional comments from people (not here I mean) who clearly want to use lack of this as an excuse not to take measures I simply don't get; It's a new disease, *of course* things were going to change as they discovered more about it. We didn't know shit and...

Re: The Future Will Despise Us Brutal Bastards

The Obama pandemic playbook called for clear, consistent, and unified messaging about risks and precautions, which Trump roundly ignored. Would that have headed off the partisan divide about masks and closures? Who can say.

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Why did Trump get so many votes? Mr. Trump abdicated responsibility, shifting the burden onto states and municipalities with busted budgets. He then waged a war of words against governors and mayors — especially Democrats — who refused to risk their citizens’ lives by allowing economic and social a...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

No, this is the part where a minority of the lower house of a state legislature can't even pass a non-binding resolution in a chamber their party controls to prevent the casting of electoral votes that the other side doesn't even need. This is about as far from an apocalyptic final battle as you ca...

Re: Voting methodologies

I think that's a good range, but on the long side. I'd rather people be limited out faster, like with the Senate I'd go with either 2 or 3 6-year terms, and with the House I think that 6 or 8 2-year terms is fine. I think I'd prefer keeping the House terms at 2 years so that there is the possibilit...

Re: Voting methodologies

I've been thinking about term limits a bit lately. My ideal schema would look something like: POTUS: Keep it just like it is. Four year term with a limit of two terms. Senate: Keep the six year term and impose a limit of four terms. House: Increase term length to four years and impose a limit of fiv...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Plus you've got people who are part of the Blue coalition yelling 'defund the police' while they loot Target. And even though that is the exception rather than the rule, it's what plays on the news. Trump responds by promising lawn odor and deploying troops to protest zones. If you're a low-informat...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

OK. That's the piece I was missing. I assumed there had to be some outside determination that was provided. TBS, I'm not particularly fond of such power being delegated to a bureaucrat. What happens in 2024 if Pence and Harris are tied at 270? Or if the GOP denies Trump the nomination in 2024, but ...

I'm not sure it's the Party responding that way so much as it is a handful of people saying it very loudly without evidence and everyone else just looking the other way.

I like about half of the Coen Bros work, and I imagine without checking that most people are about the same. My favorite is the Hudsucker Proxy, and I'll never understand the love for Raising Arizona.

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Interesting article about the schism in Team Blue, and why they managed to do so poorly against a party led by Donald Trump. Too long, don't read. Hugh clipped most of what's worth reading. I waded through about two-thirds before packing it in. We already lived through the election-night drama, the...

Arise, zombie thread! Interesting article about the schism in Team Blue , and why they managed to do so poorly against a party led by Donald Trump. Over the course of our conversations this summer, the congresswoman returned time and again to a baseline observation of her party. It was something she...

Blind Fury . With the right script and good fight choreography, Rutger Hauer as Zatoichi should have been a badass 80s action movie. But they decided to veer into family/comedy territory by giving him a bratty child sidekick and comically inept goons to fight. What a waste of Hauer, Sho Kasugi, and...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

Am I allowed to freak out yet? If not, why not? No. Because nothing has actually happened, and all the people who actually control what happens are still following the law. If a state elections board goes rogue, we have a problem, but for right now, freaking out just gives him more respect than his...
