Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

An interesting article on America's change from a high-trust to a low-trust society, what this bodes for us, what history suggests, and how we might turn things around. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/10/collapsing-levels-trust-are-devastating-america/616581/ I don't agree with it al...

Re: The libertarian case for Biden

It's not far from my own take. You aren't voting for people or even policies per se, you are voting for coalitions that want certain things and are willing to do certain things to get them. If an anti immigrant, anti media animus coalition which is motivated by conspiracy and a sneering at norms as ...

Jerry is dating a woman who always wears a red ballcap. It's not a MAGA hat, but it looks enough like one to be weird, right? On the other hand, the sex is fantastic. Elaine asks if his girlfriend tries to wear the hat DURING sex. Jerry declines to answer. George rhapsodizes that more people should...

Rome is pretty notorious for tourist food. It's a general rule that areas of the highest tourist traffic have the worst food.

It's just "ne" in Japanese or "eto ... ne". It's a particle meaning something like "right?" but it's used a lot like "umm" in sentences.

In the US, "authentic to be avoided" simply means "I need 4 extra cups of sugar per serving and I need to make sure everything remotely bitter has been relentlessly stomped out - it should basically taste either like ice cream or french fries".

Zizek is just a straight communist and is generally subject to the normal criticisms of straight up communists. The power and oppression lenses are definitely useful ways to interrogate events if you don't insist they are the only ways to analyze outcomes. I think that under careful scrutiny most of...

I'm not sure which element of pasta sauce is doing the stomping. It's an unbelievable upgrade to always use good quality canned tomatoes like Cento or Muir Glen. Always whole peeled never diced. To prevent diced tomatoes from disintegrating out of a dice in the can a preservative is added that defin...

I like to listen to stories from inside a tribe other than my own told by people I consider generally careful and thoughtful. Basically I wanted to see what the take was going to be on achievement. Would it be test scores don't matter, do parents feel that way or just reporters and reformers etc.

Re: Podcasts - Watcha listening to?

I listened to the first episode. Their definition of white is one foreign even to me, and I grew up among upper middle class prep school strivers. ditto Chana keeps saying "white parents" when what she means is "wealthy parents" or even just "parents". There’s a super strange pivot in here I found ...

I do not trust the CDC to get much right. I do not trust tge authoritarian states to even bother with risk calculus or to reveal if it goes wrong. If there is broad consensus among non authoritarian non CDC agencies about one I’d probably go a couple of months. Unlikely I’d go earlier.

So I always laugh at people who say if Other Team wins I’m moving to another country. I’m kind of feeling that way myself rn, because all the teams are the stupidest versions I’ve seen and I don’t believe the center will hold. I think it is entirely possible the teams are “Q Anon truth must be expos...

I’m relatively neutral on extending unemployment as an emergency measure. The idea that this approach represents how things should work forever is profoundly misguided. It does feel like the next person will be Cottonesque. There isn't another competing narrative. Certainly not anything close to fusionism, or even fiscal hawkishness or anything. It's cultural. I think Trump needs to lose then the attempted Cottonarian needs also to lose, then maybe elephants will t...

I'm in agreement with much of that but also unsure of carts and horses. If the forces that gave us trump are grassroots, the problem is grassroots and we were always going to be arguing about this regardless of leadership.
