Re: Infrastructure

I ain't stepping in no transporter. I'm firmly on team "that is not you on the planet surface". This is pretty clear to me in that there's nothing in the whole process that actually requires disassembly on the ship. If you remain whole on the ship and just assemble an identical quantum state blah bl...

Re: The "Historically Rich" game

Supply can be low and demand for that specific thing can be low at the same time, resulting in low price. A key feature of this is that some key set of features is unique and not seen as substitute-able be people who like the good. So if there's a box and it's storage only, the universe of goods tha...

Re: Food

It's very close to chana masala straght up. Add ginger and a whole onion to the aromatics, add cumin, coriander and turmeric with garam or tandoori masala. Do the onion in oil for a good 10 minutes over low in oil, add a dash of water, scrape and stir, and keep doing that until they are pretty brown...

Re: 400 ppm

The claims about lower operating cost vs higher initial investment have a lot of hand waving in them. Try pricing triple panel low e windows. They are about 20% more expensive and will save you 2% in northern climates. 30 years or so to actually save. Easiest is replacing power hogs with newer model...

Re: And Then There Were Four (The Impeachment Thread)

Re Carter Page. They flat lied about his role as an informant during that period. He was an informant. They knew he was an informant and they represented his contac with Russia as suspicious in the filing. To take that as an oversight is absurd.

Re: And Then There Were Four (The Impeachment Thread)

I'm still more or less on team: - The FISA warrant to monitor Carter Page was complete BS and FBI members involved in lies and misrepresentations should face criminal consequences. The nature of the lies and misrepresentations is this particular case make me profoundly skeptical that it is "run of t...

I think overall people make too much out of "matching" woods in a house. Like with cabinets and furniture and floors. That said, I've always preferred painted trim and yes I do think white or off white is pretty good in most cases.

At least he didn't shoot himself in the foot. That's more commonly a result of pistol malpractice like the dreaded "reholster with finger on trigger" maneuver. Hard to get the muzzle of a rifle low enough - that's usually a shoot someone else kind of mistake, which is probably worse. I've accidenta...

Re: Guns and Whatnot.

For further clarification- the thing that holds the bullets is the magazine. You can see him pull the magazine out of the gun. That action in itself never ever constitutes clearing the weapon because the topmost round in the magazine after you fire is lifted from the magazine and put into the chambe...

Re: Guns and Whatnot.

Unless I'm missing something, the guy nearest was clearing his rifle and accidentally discharged it into the dirt. I assume this is a drill instructor yelling meaning that guy is about to get his butt kicked and much more florid language will be used in the process.

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Eh I thought it worked pretty well. I definitely didn't need blue o vision or Ridley Scott golden light. It was suggestive of clown colors under a bit of dirt. The yellows of raincoats and cabs in the streets were high contrast - not like Dick Tracy or anything but I dunno man I thought it was a pre...

I have the problem of insufficient noise isolation in many designs. I'm surprised airpods are decent in that regard. They look like a) they are getting ready to fall out all the time and b) there's no isolating mechanism I can see.

I love this mini article about how surplus and consumption tend to rise together convincing everyone that the current times of surplus are terrible or impossible or even that there is no surplus. "To generalize only a little: In the 1950s camping was an acceptable vacation. Hand-me-downs were accept...

Optimistic "libertarian moment" type writers latch onto hopeful signs quickly, but I don't know that compared to lots of other outlets and their pet things Reason is particularly bad about being critical.

File powder is ground sassafrass leaves. It’s a thickener. One of the gumbo categorizations is okra type vs file type. I find it hard to make gumbo in small batches due to the time it takes to build a dark roux. I want fat in some amount of depth so it can be stirred and not burn flour over the cour...

Best gumbo I’ve made. Roux was some bacon dripping plus Kroger duck fat in a jar (???!!) 1c to 1c flour. 45 minutes cook to dark caramel not quite mocha. Tons of aromatics - 2 onions, 2 bell peppers, 2 jalapeños, 4celery ribs, 1 head garlic. Had real chicken stock this time. Chicken, andouille, and ...
