Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

I got pointed to "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" by N. K. Jemisin, her answer to/variation on "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas". I just read it. It's the first Jemisin thing I've ever read, and based on her contempt for her reader it will probably be the last I read her broken earth stuff this spr...

As a practical matter, the Soviet strategy might have also been to let the scientists keep working, get answers, and then steal the results.

Re: The Road to Damascus

I'm still at the wary stage when I'm not sure I'm ready to worry about/despise the Biden cabinet, and am just content with a step down to mainstream career political fuckheadedness vs. nepotism and excessive consideration toward Russia when it comes to foreign policy. In the case of Syria, how long...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

I'd argue that the Unite the Right rally would have not happened at all with a president who didn't openly embrace fascist support. Not even just a handful of skinheads being yelled at by counter-protestors. The whole point of it was that the psycho-racist end of the right saw Trump as a sea-change...

I don't watch it, but I assumed it was about the Mandalorian.
(It’s not) but it could be like how Ronin is about Jean Reno’s character, not Robert De Niro’s.

The grocery store we most frequently go to isn’t ‘disrupted’ like it was in March/April, except for paper towels, where they only have store brand (but with the different levels within that)

Re: what's so funny about that?

I definitely think I don’t like the average Coen brothers movie as much as everyone else does. Watched Burn After Reading for the first time last night, and I fell again that it was missing another gear, or (to borrow a phrase) one more thing to tie everything together. The particular thing I’m thin...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Does Mandalorian S2 get better? I'm gonna be real honest ... I thought the execution of that show was in the last half of S1 pretty horrific. That ep with the "lets go raid the prison ship haha betrayal" was so awfully produced I kept looking for robots mocking it in the front row. The first episod...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

We saw Fargo this weekend, I had never seen it before. It was ok, but I’m not sure why people rank it in the top tier of Coen brothers movies. Perhaps the passage of time has made many of the elements cliche to me, e.b Steve Buscemi doing the standard Steve Buscemi. I did appreciate the subtlety in...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

I always forget how much DS9 & Voyager overlapped in their initial syndication runs. I always think voyager started and ended much later compared to when DS9 was produced.

ETA - and that all three of TNG, DS9, & VOY all had about the same number of episodes (170-180)

I’ve been watching Discovery as it’s being re-aired on regular ol CBS. I like it. Though I can’t keep track of which Klingon is which to save my life. I seem to remember the reviews on it when the first season came out being somewhat mixed. To me, it’s certainly the best out of the gate series sinc...

It’s amusing to me that the TV show has the royal family as the fun loving carefree ones and Thatcher as a boring drone. Who knows, it might actually be true.

It’s just such a reversal from the Queen movie (the one will Helen Miriam)

Star Trek:Acid Party https://youtu.be/BZlRt05RY9Y That started out pretty good. Had a kind of "Music From the Hearts of Space" thing going, but the jokey stuff just killed the vibe. It’s not something IMO to be watched in one continuous sitting, but rather use the progress slider bar at random.
