In Russia, Vaccine prevents you.
In August, Russian state media rolled out the red carpet for a bombshell announcement -- President Vladimir Putin, from his residence outside Moscow, unveiled what he said was the world's first registered coronavirus vaccine, meant to bring Russia closer to the end of a devastating pandemic.

Putin, who is famously secretive about his family, said one of his daughters had already been inoculated as part of the early-stage trials and felt "well," to bulk up the vaccine's safety claims.
Now, as the second wave of Covid-19 hits the country -- with record numbers of new infections and deaths -- the vaccine, named Sputnik V, is far from being widely available to the general public.
Russia has passed a grim milestone of 1.5 million cases and at least 26,269 deaths, although experts have previously cast doubts on Russia's counting methods.

Covid is unique in that it only spreads after 10pm.

I think there is a plausible rationale for the 10pm closure time. It can be argued that a not-insignificant portion of the people going to those establishments earlier in the evening are there to eat, but that after 10, everyone there is just there to drink and hang out. Hell, most bars have the kitchen close at 10 or 10:30. So if you're trying to keep places in business, you try to have people doing the safer things there, and cut down on the most problematic things.

Now, that's just the plausible rationale. The reality is that it doesn't matter. People aren't gonna narc on the bar if it stays open later. They're not going to narc on them if they're flouting the "you must order food and only stay as long as it takes to eat it" rule if they're just leaving a basket of chicken fingers on the table all night and not busing tables. Either the place will stay open, and potentially spread the virus, or it'll close, and potentially go out of business permanently.

And, honestly, there are just a bunch of tradeoffs. If you say "Covid spreads at bars, therefore close all the bars, period", people are going to call for your head, people are going to lose their jobs, and some of them are going to go to illegal bars and clubs where there's even less monitoring.

That Biden's chief of staff was a covid denier before the Great Realignment and no one has given him any reason to even try to cover that up.

The first confirmed case of Covid in NY was in March, two weeks after that tweet.

In early February we didn't have a Covid epidemic, or at least not one anyone would have been expected to know about.

Re-reading the early parts of this thread. Hoo boy, was I ever wrong when I made this prediction:

The universal shelter in place rules won't last much longer. Americans simply don't have the patience for this shit.
I dunno; it depends on how bad covid-19 gets -- and more precisely, how many Americans are personally affected by it somehow. (I mean personally affected by the disease itself, not by the quarantine or other responses to it.) Fortunately, I suspect/hope MOST Americans today are more or less where I am: I personally am not sick, nobody in my household is sick, and while I do have some friends and acquaintances (including people on this very forum) who unfortunately have themselves or a spouse come down with an illness strongly suspected to be covid-19, so far everyone connected to me in any way is "only" suffering the mild forms of the disease -- the sort of thing where, if not for the news coverage, they'd think they just had an unusually gnarly cold or mild flu.

But if, Zod forbid, things change enough that most Americans instead say "Either I, or someone I care about, got extremely sick or even died of it" ... the quarantine will last at LEAST until that all ends. And not only will most Americans support this, they'll likely demand the quarantines be made stricter.

It's only tangentally related but Measles Is Back With a Vengeance, Killed 200,000 in 2019.

I am sure the anti-vaxxers will oppose the COVID vaccine when it is finally available.

I trying to get tested. Someone I had dinner with last friday turned up positive, as did everyone they watched football with (I wasn't there for that). I have nasal and chest congestion but it's pretty mild and no fever.

Good luck. Study hard.

A few times I've felt those symptoms and it's friggin' scary but sometimes it's just something like running the central air for the first time in quite a while, or having done a whole bunch of yard work. Hope it passes quickly.

Well I think its more nuanced than that. He's an idiot to think that vaccinations are going to "cause damage". Some people vaccinated is better than nobody. But he is entirely correct to be skeptical that an administration that has demonstrated the inability to accomplish even basic tasks competently can now magically accomplish an unprecedented logistical task (though of course it would still be insanely challenging for even a competent Biden administration, which we have no guarantee of at this point).

And if I were black or hispanic I would absolutely be concerned about equitable distribution. Fool me once... I don't particularly care to see a re-run of the early testing where if you were famous you could get one but if you're just a working schlub fuck you.

I trust Walgreens and CVS a lot more than I would the public health authorities to get the vaccine out there. And that takes a major load off of public health mobile units serving "healthcare deserts", which will still have long lines and shortages because public health.
