Drupal Rules! phpBB Droolz! lol

Post by grylliade »

All decisions are bad ones, especially those taken under the influence of massive quantities of alcohol. Probably this decision is bad. Complain about phpBB. Complain all you want. We'll listen, and do something about it if paid enough. Ahem, I mean, as soon as possible.

Go to User Control Panel. Click on the second tab, Profile. The third option on the left is "Edit Avatar." You should have permissions to upload an avatar to the site; I don't think I have offsite linking allowed at the moment, but I could change that if need be.

I'll be adding some styles to the boards tonight. If, after I add some, you see one you like, let me know and I'll add it to the boards. (The site with the styles is here.)

I hope phpBB has gotten better about security over the years, but I'm the last person to defend Drupal except in an extremely pragmatic way.

It's sad that it really doesn't work that well as a community site, given that it was developed for that.

One really bad thing it does is break the Back button. After you post a comment, going back triggers a warning about resubmitting a form. I haven't written an application that does that since around 2001 or so. I predict many more double-posts in our future.

The "view active topics" link at the top of the forum home page.

I don't get how you find the new messages you haven't read yet. I distinctly remember clicking on a button that said "View unread posts" or something like that, but I'm still seeing old posts, and I'm not recognizing any kind of visual signal that tells me which ones are new/unread.

EDIT: Oops, never mind.

EDIT: Wait, where is the "Forum home page"? I'm not seeing any "View active topics."

EDIT: Never mind. Fuck.

This is all unfamiliar and stuff.

EDIT: So after you are "viewing active topics," how do you find the posts that are actually new?

EDIT: Oh, there's a little icon you can mouse over. Fuck.

Just so y'all know: as far as I can tell, at least one of the styles doesn't have a link back to the User Control Panel, so if you change to that style (Minimal) you wouldn't be able to switch your style back. I'll leave it there for the moment, but if you have a problem with this I can change your preferences back to the default so you can experiment with other styles, if you want.

I'm going to look into if there's something I didn't install, but as far as I can tell only proSilver (the default style) and one other I can't recall at the moment have quote buttons on individual posts. Just an FYI.

Just like drupal, I'll live with the default style. It doesn't hurt my eyes and I'm sure I'll figure out the idiosyncrasies in short order.

However, I will not, repeat NOT, use the little fucking smiley face emoticons on any of my comments and will mercilessly mock those who do.

There is a "Manage Foes" feature in the User Control Panel. But I'd be careful with that, with great power and all.
