Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!
The NYer also published this a while back: The Plague Year which deals more with the political aspects of things in the US. There's a lot in there about how the Feds basically took an adversarial stance with the states, which led to some pretty crazy things, up to and including using the state Nati...

Re: Petty annoyances
People all too often make what in legal jargon are called admissions against interest; that is, you might say something that could be inferred to be an admission of at least a small level of negligence on your part -- people often say such things thinking they're trying to be reasonable and accommo...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
If I want this to melt tomorrow, I'm gonna have to shovel it off the driveway. Even facing SW with no shade, if it's just ice / snow / sleet covered, it doesn't melt due to too much reflection. So tomorrow morning I'll be shoveling it off, whatever we end up with.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
As usual for this winter, our "6-8 inches of snow" today is more like 2 inches of sleet. It'll probably get worse with some rain to freeze it all together or snow to pack it down more.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
Somehow I wish your analysis had a higher forest to trees ratio, but hey, A) that's hardly your responsibility and B) maybe life is just like that sometimes.... Well, you're right in that it's not "This one decision made this happen." It's that there were hundreds, thousands of individual decisions...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
Sure, okay. Seems a summary of what you're saying is that this was something of a "worst possible scenario" result of decisions that all have their pros and cons and are not substantively different from trade offs inherent to decisions made by any state or governing body generally. The upshot of th...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
It's not that this was unforeseen, or it was completely negligent, or it was a mistake. This is the consequences of the design decisions you make when you are planning around weather. Just like in my job, we make decisions about whether we want the inlets to pick up 85% of the 2-year storm, or do we...

Re: Post Urbanism?
I'm hoping that my workplaces keep the accommodations to continue to work from home even as some or most people are back in the office. Allow for meetings via Zoom / Teams / Google Meet, especially for inter-organization meetings. Personally, I'm probably past a point where it would hold me back fo...

Re: Post Urbanism?
I think the main thing is that people want to have more variety. Working from home a few days a week, even maybe most days? Great, especially if you've been required to go to the office every single day for the whole reasons of "using the work computer" and "being where the boss can see you". Having...

Re: Petty annoyances
One wonders if it's truly incompetence, or if it's calculated to basically fleece you out of an amount that is not worth the hassle to fight. Takes almost no time to put you on a list of automated harrassment, to auto-generate letters and mail them out, and take a few phone calls.

They do what they can to other them, say they weren't actually on the team, and eventually, if necessary, will mentally excommunicate them based on whatever things they can think of. People in general are really good at that: "Democrats are the pedophiles. That guy is a pedophile, so he must REALLY...

I ask this in all seriousness. At least some Q followers really do seem to believe Dems run child abuse rings and want to stop it. What are the chances they will go after allied MAGA when it's proved thst *they* are the ones raping babies? Just how much cognitive dissonance do we estimate people ca...

I think the point in the original article, that materials science is far far better, combined with the fact that engineering is much better as well, leads to a situation where there are a lot of things that, even if they look the same, just work much better now, for longer, with less wear, but aren'...

What is Trump even doing these days? With the caveat that I'm not the most informed person, it seems like after he got booted from Twitter he dropped off the face of the earth. He has set up the "Office of the Former President". Also his lawyers are bailing on him setting up the hope for him to rep...

raw potatoes made the fridge list. ?! This is something I am unfamiliar with. I will have to research this further. Yeah, I'm unfamiliar with that as well. We keep potatoes in paper sacks in the pantry, which is dark most of the time, and have had no issues with insects or quick rotting or sproutin...

And all this happened pretty at the same time that Bitcoin is surging, which made buying up GPUs to do Bitcoin mining profitable again I am skeptical of this claim. Mining BtC with stacks of GPUs in your basement can't compete with the warehouses of dedicated mining modules. The average time betwee...

Your best bet, honestly, is to make friends at your local computer store, especially if there's a larger retailer like Micro Center, as they do get shipments in. You can find out when they are getting one and do it the old fashioned way: Wait in line.

Yes, graphics cards are unobtanium. The pandemic created a shortage a year ago that lasted all summer, and then there was a whole new set of cards from Nvidia and AMD, which were very supply limited due to fabrication constraints, which led to basically all of the online supply being bought up by bo...

This could also go in the insurrection thread, but I think this guy really speaks to the deep hole of delusion republicans are living in. Apparently this keeps alive a streak of Tom Brady's: Every time his team has lost the first game of the season, the team has gone to the Super Bowl for that season. Of course, he's only lost the first game of the season 4 times in his career. And he's gone to the Super Bowl in more than half of the ...

Everyone I follow was up in arms over the Austin nomination for exactly this reason. A lot of them decided not to pick a fight over it after the capitol riot, though, basically on the grounds that we need to have someone in the role. Pretty much the same here, the places I read were mostly critical...
