A Gen X-er being less neurotic about gender: https://static.independent.co.uk/2021/02/25/00/newFile-2.jpg?width=982&height=726&auto=webp&quality=75 (In response to a late Boomer flying the trans flag.) This is the generation that's had a cultural undercurrent of doubt as to whether we measure up to ...

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day
Certainly a lot of three-chord songs. I forget who, but a member of REM once said that a friend of his said the band only used three of the four rock chords, but they used the Hell out of those three.

Re: I don't wanna see that!!!!
Why hasn't anybody ever tried to make a TV series out of Buckaroo Banzai? I would watch. You even use the original cast - they're all way past their prime, so might work for peanuts. I remember Weller as pretty entertaining in Odyssey 5 for the season it ran. I have that around here on DVD to watch...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening
This bill was submitted before and failed. Do we have any evidence that it's not just a "so they can mention it to their supporters" kabuki play that will go down just as hard? I ask, because I follow a different board where people used to be consumed in paroxysms of rage about every no-hoper bill s...

Re: No Sandwich is Safe: The Joe Biden Presidency
I know. Still, I remember when Joe From Lol explained to me that Obama's operation of Gitmo was totally different from W's. And on some level he was right, and on another level I was still like "Yeah, this is all we get? Shit." On the other hand, the only big differences there were actually trying ...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds
And I'm sitting here all "But, Maplethorpe! 2 Live Crew!" It's like when people point out that "small government" conservatives are happy to spend a lot of money and increase the power and scope of government operations they like. For most of those people, the whole freedom of expression business w...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds
I mean, yes, there was plenty of PC in the 80's and 90's, but there were also enough right-wing scolds getting attention that edgy art still felt more left-wing than reactionary. Nowadays sexually explicit art is likely to elicit lefty scolding and a Fox News segment on how terrible the lefty scold...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds
I'll give those essays a read in a bit, but having read some about #MeToInceste (wealthy French bohemians getting up to all sorts of child abuse in the name of sexual liberation decades back) and remembering the likes of Marion Zimmer Bradley and her scene in the US, I can't help thinking that it's ...

The next time somebody whines at you about how much more enlightened Europeans are France, cradle of the Concorde, the face transplant, and the first isolation of HIV, is more wary of vaccines and the economic value of science than more than 140 other countries, according to a global survey of publ...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
I was actually debating that thread with my friend Alex a minute ago. He rather strongly disbelieved that a group of anybody would not have one person who thought to bring a mechanical can-opener along with them or know how to start a fire. (Mind, his thinking for "survival" starts with "can opener ...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
I know for a fact that all the Best Buys around here have a snow shovel apiece (for their use, not for sale). Comes of being run by midwesterners. I assume serious survivalists already had wood-burning stoves and aren't just frozen among their supplies. But who know? I admit "extreme cold weather wi...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
I wish I'd photographed the horrified look of my cat when he took a look out the window at the snow. It's 10 degrees out, right now. 10. It's trying for 5. Outages all over the place, today. Mom was without power for most of the day; fortunately, she had a gas fireplace and could keep herself and th...

Considering how often we talk about parliaments as a cure-all for American democracy, this interests me more at the moment: https://mobile.twitter.com/AndrewRCraig/status/1360704657149079555 Mind, the Cold War idea that we must have one man ready to blow up the world take decisive action at a moment...

The next week looks like this sort of bullshit: https://i.imgur.com/HTMKkBG.png Jeez. Single-digits was considered unusually cold even in New England, and our buildings are much better at handling cold than I'd expect to find in Texas. If you have, like, a bunch of old blankets or similar things, yo...

Congrats! Enjoy your long future of doing nothing at all to maintain that income, as the Twitter kids keep telling me. To be fair they have a bit of a point. The only reason I have the house is that I outlived my parents. (The house I bought with my own money I’m still futzing around with) (the hou...

Apparently, cryodoom is headed for my region. Hard freeze with lows possibly in single digits.

Given how much open schools last school year seemed to involve chugging along until suddenly someone tested positive and all the kids went home, I kinda suspect the local ISD, which has been open all this school year during the explosion of cases, isn't looking too hard for sick kids.
