Re: What are you reading?
I started The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin last night. Pretty good so far; I will definitely say she is a punchy, impactful writer. Having read two things by her now, one thing that really stands out is her habit of using the second person in her writing (although I will certainly admit that could be...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!
I have made the comment repeatedly that my profession and those who work alongside of us arent academically inclined as a group. This group is composed of nurses and techs of all kinds. The observation is rarely received well. Of course they’re academically inclined. They once memorized a bunch of ...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!
Part of the issue, I think, is that the lower levels of medical education (sub-MD and BSN, and perhaps, sub-RN) are very much technical school based. Those who can memorize and regurgitate do just fine, but end up coming away with little, if any, scientific understanding. This is especially true amo...

Re: 2020 Status Check
We don’t have enough tests (still). Because so much transmission is by asymptomatic or presymptomatic people, the only way to make that work would be with very, very widespread testing repeated frequently.

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy
On one level you guys are of course right. On another level, we're talking about something that will go down in history books, and I can't fault someone in the military for hesitating before committing troops. In the end, they did agree to send troops (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/06/us/politics...

Plus, apparently the DOD said "nah, we don't think so." to both the Capitol and DC asking for the National Guard to be deployed. How is that not part of a coup? (TV is the source of the Capitol information) https://twitter.com/radleybalko/status/1346910572122492935 I might be missing something, but...

Re: Setec Astronomy
This could admittedly go in a whole bunch of threads. I got home yesterday and discovered I'd received something in the mail, which I was not expecting, and the return address was "Ingram Micro CFS", which didn't provide a clue. Opening it, I discovered a Google Nest Mini with a note saying "Happy ...

There's nothing new there. Trump and his maga minions have been insisting that this thing is really just the flu since the beginning. And when the numbers indicated something else, then they pretend the numbers are fake. Now, they're doing it the other way, pretending that a few scattered cases of a...

Oh, and in the next tweets, he basically said that Roberts hasn't sued him for libel because Roberts can't defend himself against the accusations. These people are going to get Waco-ed, and it's going to be the only thing that forces them back underground. I think it is the inverse: They are going ...

In general, I'm much more pessimistic about people and society in general, and America in particular. -My view of American style rugged individualism is more jaundiced; while I once embraced it whole-heartedly, I now tend to view it as often leading people to actions and views that simply can't work...

Re: Random covid-19 observations
If we're going there in terms of who "deserves" the vaccine, I'd have absolutely no problem with a commission to comb through social media and anyone who wasn't taking it seriously is at the very back end of the line. I'd add "or at all ever" but we need the herd protection thing (which is why the ...

It is also being reported by the NYP. Make of that what you will. I believe that Spam is a real thing in Hong Kong. There's a place we used to order from regularly that had some spam dishes on the menu. Probably a post-war British protectorate thing. Spam is an overly belittled food. The only thing...

I have a set of beefs with behavioral economics and modelling "irrational" outcomes, but I sincerely doubt those beefs are made into chicken or whatever de-beefing entails by way of a different system of mathematical modelling. My main concern with these things is they don't account for the individ...

Over 50% of the FDNY said they wouldn't get the COVID vaccine if the department offered it. This despite the data showing that firefighters are much more likely than average residents to be infected. If I were mayor, I'd be saying, "You can take the vaccine*, or you can look for a new job" but I do...

Jeff and various of his colleagues might be among the first to receive the vaccine, after medical workers, because they are "essential workers" who work on-site. Whereas I'll be among the last vaccine recipients: under 65, no co-morbidities, and no super-important job. Which means there is going to...

Given that people refuse to stop going to bars and restaurants even as the pandemic grows exponentially, no, I don’t think so.
