Re: Observations of the Random sort
In the nuclear era, the CiC role, specifically, the ability to launch a quick strike, is one of the key responsibilities of POTUS. How would that work in this system?

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)
So let's say the Republican Party for whatever reason abandons or is abandoned by Trump in 2024. What does the gryll-mind think are the chances he'd take the path of least resistance and get the Libertarian Party nomination? Almost zero. If somehow he did, the resulting party world do a major rebra...

Re: The capitol insurrection and its aftermath
I just watched one of the capitol rioters exit a federal courthouse. Ya'll!!! She leaped three steps and took off at a sprint! IN FUCKING HEELS!!! She was just a distant figure in a matter of seconds. Like goddamn. All I could think of was that episode of Boondocks where grandad is dating a prostit...

Hey, if it makes an idiot babble, maybe it has promise. Haven't followed the whole discussion obviously, but I agree with you about private prisons needing to go. "Orange is the New Black" illustrated it pretty well... - a for-profit industry has motives that go against the public interest of corre...

You know, I don't ask for much. I knew neither of my teams (Seattle and Minnesota) were going to make a deep run. I just wanted *one* thing. Just one fucking thing. Not even shooting for the moon or nuthin', I just wanted Tom Brady to not be in the super bowl. AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH Our guys will do...

I started The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin last night. Pretty good so far; I will definitely say she is a punchy, impactful writer. Having read two things by her now, one thing that really stands out is her habit of using the second person in her writing (although I will certainly admit that could be...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!
I have made the comment repeatedly that my profession and those who work alongside of us arent academically inclined as a group. This group is composed of nurses and techs of all kinds. The observation is rarely received well. Of course they’re academically inclined. They once memorized a bunch of ...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!
Part of the issue, I think, is that the lower levels of medical education (sub-MD and BSN, and perhaps, sub-RN) are very much technical school based. Those who can memorize and regurgitate do just fine, but end up coming away with little, if any, scientific understanding. This is especially true amo...

Re: 2020 Status Check
We don’t have enough tests (still). Because so much transmission is by asymptomatic or presymptomatic people, the only way to make that work would be with very, very widespread testing repeated frequently.

On one level you guys are of course right. On another level, we're talking about something that will go down in history books, and I can't fault someone in the military for hesitating before committing troops. In the end, they did agree to send troops (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/06/us/politics...

Plus, apparently the DOD said "nah, we don't think so." to both the Capitol and DC asking for the National Guard to be deployed. How is that not part of a coup? (TV is the source of the Capitol information) https://twitter.com/radleybalko/status/1346910572122492935 I might be missing something, but...

This could admittedly go in a whole bunch of threads. I got home yesterday and discovered I'd received something in the mail, which I was not expecting, and the return address was "Ingram Micro CFS", which didn't provide a clue. Opening it, I discovered a Google Nest Mini with a note saying "Happy ...

There's nothing new there. Trump and his maga minions have been insisting that this thing is really just the flu since the beginning. And when the numbers indicated something else, then they pretend the numbers are fake. Now, they're doing it the other way, pretending that a few scattered cases of a...

Oh, and in the next tweets, he basically said that Roberts hasn't sued him for libel because Roberts can't defend himself against the accusations. These people are going to get Waco-ed, and it's going to be the only thing that forces them back underground. I think it is the inverse: They are going ...
