Somehow I wish your analysis had a higher forest to trees ratio, but hey, A) that's hardly your responsibility and B) maybe life is just like that sometimes....

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Sure, okay. Seems a summary of what you're saying is that this was something of a "worst possible scenario" result of decisions that all have their pros and cons and are not substantively different from trade offs inherent to decisions made by any state or governing body generally. The upshot of thi...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Even if it's no big freaking deal in the cosmic scheme of things, it sure seems bad enough that I would very much want to say that whatever Texas may be doing to have brought it about (or shall I say allowed it to happen) I wouldn't want done where I'm living myself. If I couldn't figure out what th...

FWIW, I'm seeing the claim that their *reason* for being independent was to evade federal regulation. Could that constitute a net-pro-market tradeoff?

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Regarding that ex-mayor quote, I came back here to see if that was being discussed here. Folks on my feed are verily making hay out of this AND supposedly that he's a libertarian.

Makes me think this is how Muslims feel when their crazies get the headlines.

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

So maybe this should go in the rabbit hole thread, but should we consider claims of fraud at all? These conservatives I've engaged came up with a couple of things that aren't as easy to dismiss as the others. There's this lady who claims vans and fancy cars dumped 130,000 ballots all for Biden in D...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

On a similar note, Slate ran this piece three days ago, by a formerly conservative woman explaining why she left conservatism. Short version: it's a boy's club that only tolerates women who "know their place" (said place being vastly subordinate to the place occupied by men). On one hand that sure ...

If AZ is definitely Biden, he can win it with Nevada. It would be kind of fun to watch Trump explode if Biden won 270 - 268.
When isn't Trump exploding?

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

Perhaps foolish optimism on my part, but I think maybe this is a great outcome in terms of quelling any violence that might erupt from either side? Not called on election night (so nobody reacting then when tensions are highest), Trump's up in key states so Reds are hopeful but mail-in ballots skew...

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

Did you people really think it was going to be over last night? Yes. It depended on how things went. A big victory either way may have effectively ended it. Like if Biden had taken Florida and Texas? It was obvious that a close election would take days to sort out (if allowed by Trump's Supr...

I think the exit polling will indicate that Trump's handling of Covid will be the decisive issue nationally insofar as there is a decisive issue.
I'm thinking that blaming Covid may be the Reds' best opportunity to save face. (And of course they'll be blaming the media, too.)

Re: When journalism goes bad

Ran across this video today, where the NY Times talks to some people in other countries about US elections and how they work , and the people are uniformly shocked. Lots of "Gerrymandering? That isn't even a thing here. Voter registration? What does that even mean? And it took me literally two minu...

Re: Dancing With the Dems

Disdain for Clinton was always strong enough that any opponent for the nomination who had hung in there would probably have given her a run for her money. Webb, Chafee, and Lessig withdrew prior to the February 1, 2016 Iowa caucuses and O'Malley dropped out after finishing a distant third in Iowa. ...
