Re: Private Money!

That I'm not sure about but man I've seen the arguments surrounding fiduciary duty. It may be as you say fully exempted somehow but what I can tell you is groups of lawyers and I can give you the names of firms will spend all day every day for the rest of their lives trying to attach dollar value of...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

If this anecdote is accurate then I have no clue how America recovers. My colleague told me that efforts to overturn the election were wrong, and that voting to certify was a constitutional duty. But my colleague feared for family members, and the danger the vote would put them in. Profoundly shake...

Re: 2020 Status Check

I honestly really and for true think the cost side in the key areas of healthcare and geographically variable cost of living are the 2 most significant features of low income suffering. The general price level is not high. Incomes are rising, low skill slower than most but still. Savings is kind of ...

Re: 2020 Status Check

I mean the condition in recent history is very few people relocating - downward trend for decades. What you see in 2020 is lots of well off people relocating out of large cities. I'm not sure as the numbers aren't in how many people in middle class and down have relocated but judging by rents is som...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

I do feel like some peeps are driving particularly hard at the idea that the summer was NBD, and I don't think that's a reasonable take. It's somewhat connected to the other thing people are doing which is acting like police in large part were super aggressive in responses to the non events of the s...

Things that make me tired in the never ending cycle of equivalence/false equivalence and in the related space of whataboutisms. - We forget to talk about the thing itself. Probably. OTOH. As of right now jan 7 2021 at 5:13PM Eastern, I feel like I'm living in the stupidest possible world with the stupidest people and the stupidest institutions so just pulling levers ought to be an improvement. My first actual thoughts this AM as I woke up were something like "If I am ...

I'm not really saying we can be a Cantonic system. I'm saying that we should look at the mechanisms of its operation to see if there's anything we can do. Geneva is insanely richer than like the bernese oberland moo cow country. How does cost sharing work while retaining cantonic independence and ac...

There are I think understood parameters for large welfare states. It's just that nobody likes them when they see them up close. Everyone has to pay high taxes and agree that they want the stuff the government provides because discretionary spending at the household level is a fraction of other place...

This happens to me with music of the aughts. It's kind of a lost period where I wasn't really very much into music and I also have a sense there was a lot of forgettable things bouncing around. I feel like Killers Hot Fuss was the pinnacle of stuff I listened to at the time. It doesn't help that my ...

Re: 2020 Status Check

I would add to my list that American federalism is fundamentally broken. States are incompetent units of governance and are allowed by voters to proceed as though all real issues are federal issues. Hi here's your infinity pension I have to give you because I'm Pro Teacher. Oh you won't raise taxes ...

Jason, I don't know if you're still stuck on that (off by at least a factor of 10, if not by 30) "90,000 people died because of Cuomo's decision about nursing homes" falsehood you brought up before, and if that's why you feel like Cuomo is so responsible for things, but if that is the reason, then ...

Re: 2020 Status Check

We need to figure out how to navigate pandemic with actual risks. Every time I see that local Ohio ad saying the 'virus kills young and old it doesn't discriminate' with crying nurses I want to punch them all. Yes. It totally discriminates. Stop. Doing. That. No. It doesn't discriminate. It kills u...

The problem is that they are at least as right as they are wrong. The virus kills far more old people, but it does kill young people some of the time. And it leaves lasting marks on at least some of the young who survive it. Pham can back me up here. Those crying nurses are not being 100% accurate ...

Addendum by Jacob Siegel, one of my favorite people writing about 2020. I was going to quote but just wanted to quote it all: https://unherd.com/2020/12/why-americas-elites-keep-on-winning/ In Jacob Siegel’s telling, Trump gets absolutely no blame. So Jacob Siegel can absolutely go fuck himself. I ...

Re: 2020 Status Check

It's something about - I don't think this is actually an elites issue. There's a bottom upness to the idea that whatever your team says is the best thing at all times. Lots of people want it that way. They want to specify the outcome they desire and they want to use cudgels to get you there and wha...
