Re: 2020 Status Check

Six reminds me about how concerned I am at the persistence and normalization of conspiracy thinking. That Nashville bomb appears to be a 5g truther.

2020 Status Check

Has the totality of 2020 or its parts to include COVID, BLM, Law Enforcement, Trump, the end of Trump - changed your views on larger topics in any particular way? - I find myself very ok with contact tracing as a privacy tradeoff against global lockdown strategies in pandemics. That wasn't obvious u...

Re: Fragments of an avotoast anthropology

If you're in your thirties and you haven't realized that the rest of your life is what you make of it and has fuck-all to do with your childhood or the fact that you and your parents still don't get along, that's on you. But if you can't be at least minimally civil toward them for the rest of their...

It occurs to me that we would need a way to distinguish bipolar hobo guy from self inflicted hobo guy on the tours. I propose a scarlet twitter logo.

Re: Observations of the Random sort

My disdain is for institutional responses that treat nonsense as serious because someone on twitter might get mad at them. I think people engaging in the behavior are worthy of scorn but people acting like they have some kind of point are worse. Go to twitter saying op ed made you unsafe. Get calle...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

It is notable as a left call out to the extent people still have any residual view that counter culture is a thing of the left. If you try to analyze the behavior of the left vis a vis the establishment by trying to look at what actual beliefs are about the establishment you are missing the correct ...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

The left thinks in terms of narrative control at least as much as they think in terms of inequality. If they think The Wrong People have control of the narrative around right and wrong, they will be anti establishment. If they think they have control of right and wrong narratives they hunker down to...

Re: DOOM! (Insert extra Os as you see fit)

Work things have be completely buried these days and I would pay some amount for the convenience of having someone deliver stuff to my house
even if I have to stick it in the oven for a few minutes. "Some amount" is apparently less than $30 for 17" Donatos pepperoni.

Re: DOOM! (Insert extra Os as you see fit)

Related - i moved a bit into the sticks but still - Door Dash is preposterously expensive. Base order + "service fee" + delivery fee + tip. A large pizza from a meh common place is over $30 delivered through that service. I mocked it up and canceled the order last night because damn.

Re: DOOM! (Insert extra Os as you see fit)

Just poked around at some analyst reports. 1) There is a drought driving increased bread product prices. 2) McDonalds and most franchise companies are fundamentally real estate companies who lease space to franchisees to sell burgers to pay rent. The relationship between corporate strategy and what ...

I'm told by reliable sources that if you are of low income you shouldn't worry about prices anyway. Low prices are exploitative. You don't want to exploit people do you? Didn't think so. $15 big mac all around.

Re: DOOM! (Insert extra Os as you see fit)

Multiple factors, but one chunk of it is regional requirements for wages have increased production cost. As a national brand and because they think they have some stickiness due to the value of drive through in pandemic times, they are choosing regional price increases to a degree but also spreading...

Re: No Homo (Economicus)

I also agree that the narrative of utility is almost certainly a description of a great many decisions that are made by real people, but the mathematical modelling of these things is fraught because they don't contemplate the tradeoffs between monetary and nonmonetary incentives. That doesn't invali...

Re: No Homo (Economicus)

I find the carrying costs of the quarter to exceed the value of shopping at Aldi. It's a pure irritant. I think Meijer was doing this for a while. For some people at some margins the quarter given and returned matters, for others in other situations it doesn't.

Re: No Homo (Economicus)

I have a set of beefs with behavioral economics and modelling "irrational" outcomes, but I sincerely doubt those beefs are made into chicken or whatever de-beefing entails by way of a different system of mathematical modelling. My main concern with these things is they don't account for the individu...
