In the interests of fairness and full disclosure, I should mention that all I've heard of Eddie Izzard's standup is the first part of one album.

I wasn't sure if I'd seen Tim Minchin, so I googled him; sure enough, he was the one I'd seen doing the "ginger song" on TV a while back.

I thought he was OK but definitely one to run a joke into the ground.

Re: what's so funny about that?
JD, I definitely agree on Ginger, but I think the running the joke into the ground thing worked much better on Canvas Bags (because the song getting so ostentatious is the joke) and slightly better on "Peace Anthem for Palestine" (but this does tend to go on just one chorus too much).
I find Eddie Izzard's standup to be funny in small doses, 20 minutes each. Not a big fan of his acting.

louis ck is brutal. the show is terribly dark at times, but i would recommend it for the mood jerks and the opening credits, which are a credit to credits.

I like Russell Peters a lot. Jim Gaffigan too. The tiny bit of Emo Phillips' standup I've seen was enjoyable.
I remember seeing some Patton Oswald standup and thinking he would probably be funny when he's not talking about the Bush administration, but I haven't yet been able to confirm or refute that hypothesis with additional data.

Re: what's so funny about that?
I like Oswalt's bit about Nick Nolte.
Michael and Michael Have Issues was pretty good.
Steve Coogan has done some excellent stuff. The Trip (as a TV series) was really good. Check it out.
Peter Cook was an evil genius.
Private Eye magazine (UK political satire) can be fucking funny.
The dude who does the Nick Nolte's Mugshot account on twitter (@Nick_Nolte) is a funny cunt.
For comedy actors, I love John C Reilly. His delivery is really good, and his ability to mine the humour in a single word (e.g. "raper") is quite impressive.

In terms of dramatic comedy, as opposed to stand up, I greatly enjoy the pairing of Hugh Laurie and the Inimitable Mr. Fry. Comparable under some circumstances to Cook and Moore, and almost to Cleese and Boothe.

Stand-up comedy never really tickled my fancy. I prefer sketch comedy, and thus the stylings of the Kids in the Hall, MadTV, Chappelle's Show, and Monty Python etc.

Re: what's so funny about that?
Heard a Terri Gross interview with Louis CK this morning. It was from 2010. I found him very likable and smart in non comedian mode. He trained with Irish Mickey Ward (of The Boxer fame) because he was overweight and didn't have the endurance to do comedy in the aggressive way he wanted (which is to say he wanted to do three years of comedy coming up with a completely new act every 6-8 months). That was kind of awesome. Based on his act, I had this image of him being kind of wounded, but really not at all. He seems to have a sense of removing the veil of pretense as part of his act - but he said "that's just part of my act, it's what I'd be like if I never thought about anything after it first popped into my head".
+10 pts for CK.
